Missing at sea following boating accident

Pandy Beach - the Coastguard vessel was heading in this direction when the mishap took place

One man is missing at sea following a boating accident last night involving the Grenada Coastguard.

According to a well-placed source, one of the Coast Guard vessels was on its way to help somebody on a yacht in Pandy, just off the Grenada Yacht Services (GYS).

He said that there was a small boat with the two people on it directly in the path of the Coastguard vessel and it was not observed as no light was seen coming from it.

“The Coastguard apparently ran over it because they had no light. They were able to pick up one person and the other person is still missing,” he told THE NEW TODAY.

“From the time the thing happened to now if nobody is seen on the surface that means there can be a drowning incident there,” he said.

One of the two occupants on the small vessel was identified as 24-year old Vhondy Joseph of Scott Street in St George and the other named only as Kimon from the notorious drug-infested area known as Woburn in the south of the island.

After he was rescued, Joseph told lawmen that he and Kimon were coming from Hog Island when their boat broke down.

He said that when they saw the coastguard approaching, they put on the flashlight on their phones to alert them that a boat was in their path in the water.

However, the Coast guard vessel did not see anything and ran into the small boat.

Joseph said he jumped off the boat but did not know what happened to Kimon.

Police investigations are continuing into the incident.

A police insider said that law enforcement officials are suspicious about the activities of the two men on the small boat.

“Why these two people should be in a boat there at this time (of the night)? The names, the location and the addresses are consistent with something not smelling good,” he remarked.
