A 37-year old suspected mentally ill man was due to appear before the St. George’s No.1 Magistrate’s Court this morning charged for allegedly damaging an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) belonging to the Grenada Co-operative Bank Limited (GCBL) on Church Street in St. George.
The charge of Damage to Property was laid by officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against Christopher Blake who is originally from St. David.
Blake was apprehended by police within hours on a complaint being filed with the lawmen by an Executive of the bank on May 5 – the day the machine was discovered damaged.
The accused was believed to be staying within yards of the bank in the abandoned St. James hotel building close to the foot of Fort George where the Headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) is located.
Police have also charged two Mont Tout residents for stealing articles and cash in excess of EC$10, 000.00 from a business place in the south of the island.
The suspects – 22-year old Jamanie Warren, a Storeroom Attendant and a former employee of the affected business place, was jointly charged with Andy Lewis, a 47 year old Mason earlier in the week for the offences of housebreaking and stealing.
Prior to his arrest, Lewis was on bail for various offences of a similar nature.
Both men are alleged to have committed the act on April 11.
They have been granted bail in the sum of $8, 000.00 with one surety each, and will appear at the St. George’s Magistrate’s Court on July 16.
THE NEW TODAY understands that police are currently investigating a number of criminal activities that have taken place on the island since the State of Emergency was imposed to deal with the coronavirus situation in Grenada.
According to a source, the “Hot Spot” supermarket in Sauteurs was broken into a few days ago and a number of items were stolen.
RGPF has not released any comparative data about the criminal activities on the island this year as compared with the same period in 2019.
