Trinidadian artist Kashif ‘Kman 6ixx’ Sankar, who is facing strong criticisms for his intense and violent lyrical content has pledged to create more positive music in 2024 amidst controversy surrounding his scheduled performance at “Our Fete” in La Fillette, St. Andrew, on the eve of the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
“I really fed-up of it. Everybody on me, the police, everybody on me for lyrics… it’s just too much…So I could really tone that back and dial down and I can assure you that 2024 will be a positive year,” the entertainer avowed in an interview last week Friday on the Narrative talk show with host Calistra Farrier.
His song “No Lethal,” which according to reports out of Trinidad “references gang warfare between the Six and Seven factions in East Port-of-Spain,” was released only three (3) months ago, and has already amassed over three (3) million views.
The entertainer, whose career launched less than a year ago, acknowledged the prevalence of gangster themes in his popular music.
However, he insisted that his overseas performances do not carry a reputation for promoting violence.
Kman 6ixx has faced two (2) attempts on his life in the neighbouring twin island republic, the most recent incident occurring last month resulting in four fatalities.
He attributed these attacks on his life to jealousy within the industry.
“I would say that it is more than just music. Because it has to be that the source is the area I’m from and is jealousy because all the time that music was going on before me. In industry right now, we’re seeing more disrespectful tunes than me and nothing does be happening to them,” in explaining the reasons for the assassination attempts.
Sources within the Ministry of National Security have told THE NEW TODAY that the artiste who seems to have a contract on his life will not be allowed to perform at the CowPen in order to avoid any negativity on the island’s 50th anniversary of Independence.
Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Kman 6ixx’s appearance, “Our Fete” Promoter Jude Jack has released an alternative flyer featuring another fairly new Jamaican Dancehall artiste ‘RajahWild’, whose similar strong and violent lyrical content has sparked additional debate in the country.
RajahWild has several trending tracks on social media platforms including, “Sin out,” which has amassed over two (2) million views since its release approximately one (1) year ago, and “Lights off”, which was released six (6) months ago, and has over 3.1 million views.
While research has explored the dynamics, a direct cause-and-effect relationship between music and violent acts has not been fully established.
