Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Leo Cato, has been elected to serve as 1st Vice President of the ParlAmericas.
The announcement was revealed by Cato himself during Tuesday’s sitting of Parliament at Mt Wheldale, just outside the capital city of St George’s.
ParlAmericas is an institution run by parliamentarians for parliamentarians.
It is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of executive members and sub-regional representatives designated by national parliaments from North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean.
Cato has also been elected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Americas.
The election took place during the 20th ParlAmericas Plenary Assembly and the 8th Gathering of the Open Parliament Network, which convened more than 50 parliamentarians from 21 countries across the Americas and the Caribbean.
The joint meeting, organised by ParlAmericas and the Chamber of Senators of the Congress of the Republic of Paraguay, was held from May 8-10 in Asunción.
The assembly focused on the theme, “Building Partnerships to Strengthen Democracy and Promote Human Rights.”
The discussions aimed to foster collaboration among nations to enhance democratic processes and protect human rights within the region.
Cato’s election as 1st Vice President of the body is seen as a prestigious appointment, reflecting his dedication and leadership within the parliamentary community.
The ParlAmericas Plenary Assembly serves as a crucial forum for parliamentarians to share experiences, exchange best practices, and collaborate on legislative solutions to regional and global issues.
