Four men were brought Wednesday before Acting Chief Magistrate Teddy St. Louis on cocaine possession charges.
The suspects were apprehended Sunday during an operation mounted by officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) on a cargo vessel named Dona-Lila that was docked at the Carenage Harbour.
According to a police report a quantity of cocaine was discovered which led to the arrest of Miguel Peters, 23 years, Sailor of Diego Martin, Trinidad, Melvin Phillip, 27 years, Captain of Calivigny, St. George, Shane Mitchell, 27 years, Sailor of Paradise, St. Andrew and Maverick Cudjoe, 26 years, Deckhand of Harvey Vale, Carriacou.
The accused were charged for Trafficking in a Controlled Drug and Possession of a Controlled Drug.
The confiscated illegal drugs comprised of fourteen kilos of cocaine and carry an estimated street value of one million, six hundred and ninety-nine thousand, four hundred dollars (1,699,400.00.).
The Dona-Lila makes periodic visits to Grenada from Trinidad to drop off cargo but is known to operate mainly in the islands in the Northern Caribbean.
The police report said that one additional person is in police custody assisting with investigations and charges are likely to be laid against him.
Chief Magistrate St. Louis has set September 3 as the next date for the men to appear in court.
