The National Democratic Congress is dismayed at the level of corruption by the current administration exposed this week when evidence surfaced that clearly shows that this NNP administration led by Dr. Keith Mitchell and Mr. Gregory Bowen, is using taxpayers’ money to pay the monthly telephone bills of known NNP political activists.
The NDC calls on the NNP Administration to ensure that the relevant authorities investigate and where necessary, fearlessly prosecute these criminal acts. Using Government resources in this manner constitutes a serious fraud against the people of Grenada.
The NDC wants to know who is responsible for reviewing and paying the Government telephone bills and why so many persons not employed in the public service are receiving this benefit. While the Government is boasting of paying the bill on time the people are more concerned with whose bills you are paying and why.
This is another example of the NNP blatantly misusing the peoples money and their total disregard for the separation of the work of Government from NNP party. Taxpayers are paying the operating costs of the NNP while opposition voices are stifled.
It is well known that former Prime Minister Tillman Thomas had strong views on this matter, that the political party should not use Government’s resources, not even a Government office to hold a party meeting. The wisdom of this stance is clearly demonstrated by this exposure of this vulgar abuse.
The NDC reiterates the call on the NNP Administration to stop their corrupt practice of using state resources to maintain their control over the Grenadian people.
The experiences of the March 2018 elections highlighted the NNP total disregard for the State resources when they openly used it for partisan political purposes.
We call on the Integrity Commission, the FIU and the RGPF to take the necessary actions to stop this theft from the Grenadian people.
Corruption hurts everyone, including those who think they are benefiting.
The NDC maintains its commitment to integrity in public office and a separation of the activities of Government and Political Party. The people of Grenada deserve better representation.
