Worrying signs

Today I viewed a photo of a Grenadian mas band at a time when our society had higher morals. I loved that picture. As I reflect on what we are being fed today, I am reminded that there has and will always be two plans – one to build and one to destroy. Good and evil.

The will of God and the will of the devil are often disguised in seemingly harmless ways. All it takes for evil to prevail is for those on the side of good to remain silent, feel defeated and powerless.

The truth is that WE ARE NOT. Countless societies have been able to pull themselves back from certain death and decay. Grenada belongs to all Grenadians. Not just the LOUD mouth anarchist. 80% of Grenadians are just as disgusted with our social decay manifested on our streets. Those are symptoms.

The other 20% are of the view that they are profiting from it so it’s ok. That is such a myth. In the long term NO ONE profits. Evil knocks on every door. Where will we hide then? What are our defences against it?

If your door is wide open or your fence too low it will come in and occupy the master bedroom. What we accept today will determine what we should expect tomorrow. If we remain silent we allow all manner of evil to grow, take safe haven and thrive on our watch.

Our neighbours and the world are watching. If Grenada becomes a safe place for all manner of madness they will come. With the drugs and the guns and the behaviours and God knows what else. We have a responsibility to our children.

Just as there is an agenda being strategically implemented for evil, there must be an agenda strategically implemented for good to sanitise our society. If not the Spice Isle would become known primarily for Jab, nude mas and easy access to our young girls and boys.

We do not have the resources to put in place those social safety nets needed to protect our youth, seniors, many of whom are being sexually assaulted in silence, our mentally and semi-mentally (I may fall in that category) challenged citizens.

Add that to wanting to legalize Marijuana. HAVE WE GONE MAD? Every time we have to build an institution to try to deal with the problems we mindlessly create, we are showing how much we have failed.

I am sick of it. SICK, SICK, SICK OF IT. I am appealing to all Grenadians, become a Proactive Nation Builder. We have to save ourselves. Know and use your power to influence positive change. For this year choose to step away from the madness. Don’t attend. Create or attend alternative forms of entertainment with a higher standard. Appeal to promoters and mas band leaders to provide Grenadians with affordable alternatives.

Use your voice, your cameras, your social media to document and share other positive vibes and stay away from the disgusting. Become a journalist at this carnival. For those who don’t care about exposing themselves they should not be offended about being exposed.

Maybe a student’s thoughts of his/her classmates viewing the most intimate parts of his or her mother would be the deterrent. Or our students not being able to hear the teacher’s voice because of the distracting images of seeing her playing the nudest mas in his mind.

There was a time when our calypsos, mas chants and parang songs were powerful deterrents to social misbehaviors. A form of social control. There are laws on the books to prevent nudity in public spaces. There must be a call for those laws to be upheld.

A few questions to each of you voicing your disapproval at what we now have. What will YOU do about it? Will you attend a forum to call for change? Will you put on a beautiful traditional mas costume and join in the comical and fun theatre on the road that once was our Grenadian Mas?

Would you allow your children to play short knee or maypole or join a cultural keeper’s club at their school? We have a choice. 50 years should teach us that no one is coming to save us and our society. We have to save ourselves starting with the man in the mirror.

This year become a journalist, become vocal, call for change, attend a social change rally, call for the implementation of the laws, and plan on playing traditional mas next year. GRENADA STILL BELONGS TO US.
