Response from Canada on attack on visa applications in Grenada

High Commission of Canada
Bridgetown, Barbados

November 27, 2023

Dear Editor,

I would like to refer to a Letter to the Editor “Canada, we are not Pot Hounds” from PBC Old Boy that appeared in The New Today Grenada on November 18, 2023.

It is important to correct the facts. The High Commission of Canada clearly indicated in its official communications that the three-day itinerant biometrics collection visit offered a limited number of appointments to be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis via written requests and subsequent written confirmations from the High Commission of Canada.

Due to a significant surge in applications, the High Commission extended operations for an additional day to process more clients on the same first-come, first-served basis. Once the available spots were filled, applicants received written notification that no further appointments could be accommodated.

While in Grenada, High Commission of Canada staff provided biometric processing to all clients holding official appointments. In addition, they accommodated many walk-ins.

However, individuals who are not Government of Canada representatives appear to have misled several Grenadians by falsely promising to secure appointments on their behalf, contrary to the instructions in the official communications from the High Commission of Canada.

A large volume of persons travelled to the True Blue Bay Resort in an attempt to gain access to the itinerant biometrics collection without prior confirmation of an appointment.

It is important to note that all biometric fees must be refunded to the client if biometric collection does not occur. Unlike other cost recovery fees, the biometric fee is not viewed as a processing fee; instead, it is designated as a fee for service. Please visit this website for more information: https://www.ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre.

On behalf of the High Commission of Canada, I wish to thank the management and team at the True Blue Bay Resort in Grenada for accommodating our itinerant biometrics collection visit and for supporting the delivery of our work with admirable professionalism.

Canada values the enduring connections between our two countries and looks forward to ongoing cooperation and collaboration.

Sincerely,
H.E. Lilian Chatterjee
High Commissioner of Canada to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean
