I am writing to express my deep concern over the spraying of mosquitoes on Grand Anse beach. A few days ago, I was getting my daily exercise by walking along this beach and as I approached the Silver Sands resort around 6 a.m., I was suddenly engulfed in what appeared to be thick fog.
It took me a few seconds to realise that the fog was in fact a pesticide being sprayed in copious amounts to kill mosquitoes in the resort area of the beach.
I must confess that I was shocked by the disregard shown for the citizens of Grenada who walk on the beach early in the morning to get some exercise and breathe fresh air. While pesticide producers may be loathe to admit it, evidence is mounting that pesticide exposure contributes to a host of health problems, including cancer and asthma.
Surely the Ministry of Health and Silver Sands resort can strike a better balance between the comfort of hotel guests and the safety and well-being of Grenadians by spraying for mosquitoes at a much earlier hour of the morning.
I wish to assure all parties involved in this activity that the Grenadians who walk on Grand Anse beach hardly consider themselves to be mosquitoes and that many of us would like to remain on this side of the grass for a bit longer.
