Our country has lost an outstanding son in the person of Dr. Winston Thomas.
As children of the Grenada Revolution, we all benefitted from the close relationship of solidarity with the Cuban Revolution.
Tommy as he was affectionately called was a humble almost self -effacing young man. A quiet, reserved but extremely warm human being. He took his studies seriously and was an above average football player. He made friends among the multinational student body from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
We shared the little we had and provided much needed support to each other, especially in 1983, in the aftermath of the US invasion of Grenada. The Cuban government made it clear that they were prepared to allow us to continue our studies as was originally envisaged. When Governor General Sir Paul Scoon instructed that we return, Tommy’s reaction was summarised in three words “No way Jose”. Such was Winston Thomas.
Upon completion of his studies, he immediately set out to serve the Grenadian people in the medical field with humility, dignity and a level of dedication probably unmatched in recent times.
He was an outspoken social and political activist and I dare say a selfless patriot. There are those who wanted to silence him and to stultify his professional growth. He was unmoved by such sinister intentions.
In addition to naming a section of the General Hospital in his honour, I think that a foundation in his honour to assist with health care for the underprivileged and the needy will be great.
May he rest in eternal peace!!!
