Electoral Office to release names Friday of all Candidates

Arthur Pierre - Supervisor of Elections

Grenadians will know sometime today the full list of persons nominated to contest the November 5 general election, according to Supervisor of Elections Arthur Pierre.

Speaking to THE NEW TODAY on Thursday, Pierre said that some of the Registration Officers especially from the out parishes took a very long time to bring down their papers to the main office at Tanteen, St George’s.

He stated that a lot of in-house work has to be done in order to release the names of all the candidates.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell and the main opposition New National Party (NNP) were expected to submit a full slate of candidates for all fifteen constituencies on the island.

There are reports that the newly formed Democratic People’s Movement (DPM) of Peter David was only contesting nine seats in the election due in another three weeks.

The election is expected to see some close battles in several constituencies.

The most looked forward contest is in the rural St Andrew South-east seat in which the incumbent Emmalin Pierre, the NNP Political Leader is facing a stiff challenge from Education Minister David Andrew of the Congress party.

Pierre has been telling Executive members that she is “safe” but the Andrew Camp believes that they have secured enough votes to topple the female NNP Boss.

Pierre defeated Andrew by just over 200 votes in the 2022 general election but the senior government minister is said to be making significant inroads through several projects undertaken in Telescope, the biggest Polling Division in the constituency.

Another battle that is generating a great deal of interest is in rural St Mark in which two newcomers – Dr Myanna Charles (NNP) and former Acting School Principal Caris DeGannes (NDC) are facing each other in a constituency considered as “a garrison” for the opposition.

Congress supporters believe that DeGannes can close the gap of about 450 votes that NNP’s Dr Clarice Modeste-Curwen won the seat by in 2022 against NDC’s Quinc Britton.
