The main opposition New National Party (NNP) has rolled out three of its promises to the electorate in its effort to win the upcoming general election.
Addressing a party meeting at “The Limes in Grand Anse in the South St George constituency, the party’s Political Leader Emmalin Pierre pledged to remove VAT on Electricity, Water, and on Sugar.
“I say to you tonight that within the first 90 days of assuming office, the NNP will remove VAT on Sugar, remove the new levy on Water and Brothers and Sisters we are going to remove VAT on Electricity,” she told the gathering.
“We are prepared to take measures that are going to have a serious impact on the pockets of the people of this country,” she said.
The former Education Minister who is defending her rural St Andrew South-east seat disclosed that more announcements will be made when the NNP presents its Manifesto.
“Any government that worth its salt is going to do something serious about the issue of cost-of-living in this country,” she added.
On the issue of unemployment in the country, she said: “You are going to hear us roll out some measures specifically for our young people throughout the length and breadth of this country.”
Pierre stated that thousands of young people will be put back to work and to be engaged in a productive way by using the programmes associated with the New National Party.
“I can tell you tonight that priority will be given to the young people of this country in our Manifesto – not talk,” she said.
According to the female NNP boss, the belief of the NNP is that young people must earn from a programme to be initiated in which they could own their own homes as a result of “the initiative that we will announce under Housing.”
Without making specific reference to the controversial Imani programme, Pierre also said that thousands of young people were thrown out of programmes started by NNP but told them that the party is coming back “to restore these opportunities to do even better than we did before to give you more.”
In addition, she said that the NNP Manifesto for the general election will centre on its promises to the workers, public officers, farmers and fishermen as well as the Senior Citizens of the country.
Pierre is leading the NNP into its first election under a female head.
Longstanding Political Leader Keith Mitchell has led the party to the polls in elections held in 1990, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2018 and in 2022.
