Police charge hospital doctor for assault

Dr Terron Hosten – charged with assault

The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) has confirmed that Senior Surgeon at the General Hospital, Dr Terron Hosten has been charged in connection with Assault arising from an incident with another man in a place called “The Cocoa” in Paradise, St Andrew.

A police official told THE NEW TODAY: “The doctor was arrested and charged. He was placed on bail with certain conditions. The virtual complainant was informed based on the briefing I had.”

Dr Hosten is alleged to have assaulted Godwill Modeste, a brother of Trevor Modeste, the retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in RGPF at a Rum Shop in the tiny village.

His arrest comes as Junior doctors at Grenada’s premier hospital in St George’s started to show keen interest in the eventual outcome of the case involving Dr. Hosten, the Chief Surgeon at the General Hospital.

According to a senior member of the Hospital Staff, there is “a hush-hush” by Hospital Management on the issue even though a day after the incident happened sometime in May they had received information that the doctor was allegedly involved in a physical confrontation with a male individual.

“…We knew about it very early… we know about the whole thing” said one of the staffers who asked not to be named.

The source said it was clear from a posting on social media about the incident that it had to be Hosten as he was the only doctor living in The Cocoa in Paradise, St Andrew and knew of a previously reported incident involving him in the same vicinity.

The Cuban-trained medical doctor is originally from Mt Granby in St John but moved to Laura Lands in St David after his father and mother separated.

Hosten’s father is a retired member of the Police Force where he served for many years as a member of the Fire Department.

According to the source, the Registrar at the General Hospital made mention of the incident in Paradise on the Surgery Group chat and wanted to know who was the Doctor being referred to in the social media posting.

“When the Registrar made the inquiry, people on the Chat Group started making speculation. He (Hosten) came on the group and said, if anybody say anything let me know.

“Well now with that he revealed himself – he just did that in an attempt to shut down the conversation because that is his kind of behaviour.”

The source indicated that the first week after the incident took place, Hosten was never spotted on the Hospital compound.

He said the following week a notice was put on the Group Chat that Hosten was on Vacation for the month of June.

He quoted a senior Member of the Hospital Administration as telling him in recent days that the doctor is currently on Administrative Leave for 2 to 4 weeks to get counselling.

The source described Hosten as one who often exhibited a kind of behaviour to suggest that he was untouchable.

“Thing catch up with him because he touched the wrong person. He thought that (fighting incident) wouldn’t reach anywhere,” he said.

Hosten retained attorney-at-law Ruggles Ferguson, KC when the police picked him for questioning into the incident.

The other person involved is Godwill Modeste who has secured the services of Attorney Jerry Edwin who is also reportedly involved in another court matter with Hosten.

Edwin has gone on record as accusing the medical doctor of getting involved in an “unprovoked physical attack on my client an elderly man.”

THE NEW TODAY has since obtained the copy of a letter written in the name of the Medical Director indicating that Hosten is on vacation leave and not sent on leave by the Public Service Commission (PSC) pending an investigation into the Paradise incident.

Modeste has filed a report with the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) alleging that Hosten threw a drink in his face at a rum shop and then they were engaged in a physical fight.

Hosten is said to have visited the Grenville Police station in an effort to “cross charge” the case involving Modeste.
