Police are getting positive leads in Egmont killing

The scene outside the house at Egmont shortly after the shooting incident

Police are believed to be making some progress in solving the deadly Carnival Monday shooting in the well-to-do area of Egmont.

High-level sources told THE NEW TODAY that with the help of footage from a camera at the house, the lawmen are piecing together what really happened on the day of the murder.

A high-ranking member of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) confirmed that the lawmen are leaning in the direction that the incident could be part of a family feud and that a hitman was contracted to get rid of Linton Wharwood, the owner of the house at Egmont.

Dead is 30-year old Delvon Thomas of Paradise in St Andrew, but who had taken up residence in Harvey Vale in Carriacou.

Thomas is the brother of Wharwood’s estranged wife, Sherrida who was reportedly not at home during the shooting incident.

The masked gunman who entered the property also shot and injured Wharwood who had lived for several years in Brooklyn, New York before coming back home to live.

The police investigators are not looking at robbery as a possible motive for the deadly attack as the house was not burglarised.

The armed masked man is believed to have fled from the scene after shooting Thomas and Wharwood.

THE NEW TODAY cannot share some of the critical information now in the hands of the investigators to avoid compromising the case.

However, the initial bullet that was fired by the gunman was intended to assassinate Wharwood but missed the target and took out the life of Thomas who was standing just behind him.

According to the source, the video footage obtained by the police investigators are leading the team of investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) along a particular path although the lawmen are looking at other theories.

About an hour after the shooting, one of Wharwood’s friends drove into the area and seemed to be very distraught after hearing about the incident.

“It is that woman who did that – I know she is behind all of what happened up dey,” he was heard saying in the presence of several police officers at the crime scene.

The man, believed to be in his 50’s did not call the name of the woman.

Police had cordoned off the area and did not allow the gentleman and other onlookers from venturing onto the crime scene.

A police insider said that the CID investigators are getting reports that Wharwood’s wife who is from Paradise in St Andrew North-east was not living in the house with him.

According to well-placed sources, Thomas is a questionable character and came down from Carriacou to take part in the carnival celebrations.

He is believed to have slipped out of the United States back to his homeland after allegedly getting involved in some illegal activities in New York.

The injured Wharwood is the brother of Junior Wharwood who reportedly landed a diplomatic position in Canada under the 2008-13 National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to his close ties with former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David.

Wharwood was rushed to the St George’s General hospital for treatment after he was shot in the area of his upper arm.

He is associated with a mas band called Bachique.
