NDC looking to raise EC$5 million to build Resource Centre and party head office

NDC Treasurer Ambassador Andrea St Bernard – played a role in launching the fundraiser in Canada

The National Democratic Congress is looking to raise EC$5 million dollars to build a Resource centre that will also serve as the head office of the governing party in Grenada.

This was disclosed at a fundraising dinner held in Canada over the weekend by the party’s Treasurer Andrea St Bernard who holds the rank of Special Envoy for Development and Investment in the Office of the Prime Minister.

St Bernard, an attorney-at-law, said the money will be used to purchase the land space to erect the Centre and also the actual building of the facility itself.

She announced that Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has already contributed EC$50, 000 to the fund, the party’s Assistant General Secretary, retired businessman Azam Rahaman an additional EC$25, 000 of the EC$200, 000.00 already raised by NDC for the effort.

“We are seeking to build a home for the National Democratic Congress,” she told the audience amidst loud applause in the fundraising drive for the initiative.

Styled “Buy a Block Campaign”, the NDC Executive member said that Congress “has embarked upon this ambitious task of building a Resource Centre to serve as the nerve centre of the party’s operation, to be a place where communities can meet, work and organise party activities.”

According to St Bernard, the NDC Executive has already appointed a “Dedicated Finance team” to find ways to raise the funds for the building of the Resource Centre.

Elected as NDC Treasurer in November 2021, the female attorney who is a key member of the Inner Circle of the Prime Minister said the newly elected Executive members of the party took the decision to turn NDC into an institution capable of delivering service to the country and people.

“We recognise the work of a party is not just campaigning during an election season – party work is an ongoing necessity for the survival and good functioning of the party. There must be meetings of the Executive, meetings of the community, training sessions, community outreach sessions,” she remarked.

St Bernard disclosed that the NDC was in bad shape and that of the 15 constituencies on the island, it was discovered in 2021 that only 2 or 3 party constituency branches had functioning offices.

She said the NDC was eventually able to set up offices in all 15 constituencies and emerged successful in the general election held one year ago.

“We have now undertaken to build a Resource Centre which will serve as a base from which the NDC can better serve Grenada. We don’t have a final plan – we are in the early stages,” she told the audience.

“We intend to build a Resource Centre with sufficient space to host a Convention Hall, a large flexible space that can accommodate a variety of events such as Town Hall meetings, Conferences, Exhibitions and political rallies.

“It is important to note that this is an opportunity for the party to earn revenue. There are very few Convention Centres in Grenada.”

Stating that the plan is to use the Resource centre to raise revenue and to help stabilise the party’s finances, St Bernard said the primary objective is to use the facility to serve as a home for the NDC Secretariat and to become the centre of the party’s operation.

The plan, she said, also includes a media Centre within the structure.

St Bernard labelled the drive to raise the millions of dollars as “a significant undertaking”, “an ambitious goal”, and one that is “important for the stability of the party and for the ongoing growth and success of the party.”

“It will mark yet another new monumental milestone not only for the National Democratic Congress but for political parties across the region,” she said.

In a pitch to Grenadians living in Canada to contribute generously to the campaign, the NDC Treasurer said: “I am taking this opportunity to launch the “Buy a Block Campaign which gives everyone the opportunity to participate. Any little bit will help and many little bits will help a lot.”

“So please donate any little amount that you can – we will be reaching out throughout the next several months and perhaps even over the next couple years. We imagine it will take a few years to raise the funds. You will hear more about it. Please buy a block, be a part of this initiative, help us build the National Democratic Congress Resource Centre.
