Former Grenada Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has once again signaled his
intention to remain in the public limelight for some time now.
In a post on his Facebook Page Tuesday morning, the 77-year old Political
Leader of the main opposition New National Party (NNP) announced that he was
about to launch his own podcast.
Mitchell, who lost power two years ago in general elections said: “Good morning,
friends. I’m launching a podcast soon where I’ll discuss global, regional, and local
topics, share personal stories and experiences, and dive into some of my
interests, like sports. Stay tuned for more details.”
The island’s longest serving Prime Minister occupied the office from 1995 to
2008 and then again from 2013 to 2022.
Political analysts see the latest move by Dr. Mitchell as a clear indication that he
might be having second thoughts about bowing out of frontline politics as
indicated prior to his defeat at the polls.
One local commentator remarked: “Dr Keith Mitchell’s dramatic fall from his
media empire after his stinging 2022 electoral defeat has left him grasping for
political significance. Unlike some political peers, such as Tillman Thomas, who
gracefully transitioned away from the frontline of politics, Mitchell appears
determined to cling to relevance.”
“In the face of the NDC’s resurgence, a party he had dismissed as obsolete,
Mitchell is now venturing into the digital airwaves with a podcast. This move
reflects his concerns about the NDC’s growing popularity and potential impact
on Grenada’s media landscape.
“Interestingly, this development coincides with prominent talk show host Kem
Jones announcement of plans to launch his radio station by year-end, promising
to add a new dimension to our media landscape.”
This latest move by Dr. Mitchell is expected to be watched closely by his former
Agriculture Minister Peter David who has signaled his intention to replace him as
the next political boss of NNP at the upcoming convention.
Former Solicitor General and current Attorney General in Anguilla Dwight
Horsford is said to be the person heavily tipped within the hierarchy of the NNP
to contest against David if Dr. Mitchell decides not to take part in the election
during the convention expected in the August/September period.
