A man described as a 32-year old dishwasher appeared before a Grenada Magistrate today to answer a charge for murder in connection with a deadly shooting in an area known as The Bronx in Frequente, in the south of the island.
Anton DeCoteau was arrested and charged by police with the offence of Non-Capital Murder for unlawfully causing the death, in the early hours of last Thursday, of Arthur Braveboy, another notorious underworld figure on the island.
Acting Chief Magistrate Francine Foster set May 27 as the date for the accused to be brought back to court from being held on remand at the Richmond Hill prison for his matter to come before the court for “Mention” and June 18 as the actual date for the start of the Preliminary Inquiry into the murder case.
U.S-trained attorney Jerry Edwin made an appearance on behalf of the accused via the Zoom platform as he was in the High Court attending to another legal matter.
DeCoteau is also charged with the offence of Attempted Murder in connection with the shooting of a second person in the incident in which 35-year old Braveboy was killed.
Police also laid an additional charge against the murder accused for being in Possession of a Firearm and for Possession of Ammunition.
According to underworld sources, Braveboy was gunned down about three hours after another shooting incident in The Bronx in which a person associated with the “4-Roads Gang” had shot and injured a resident of the area in an altercation.
One source told THE NEW TODAY that Braveboy was in a bar drinking when he got news about the shooting in “The Bronx” and decided to venture into the small enclave to try and resolve the conflict between the two warring groups.
He said that the victim travelled in a vehicle along with his girlfriend and another person linked to the Carenage Ghetto.
The source spoke of Braveboy engaging an associate of the man who got shot and was begging him to resolve the issue and to do everything possible to keep the police out of the fall-out.
“The man was not listening to Braveboy who literally went down on his knees to beg him to let them forget that because that will only result in more bloodshed and war.
“While Arthur was on his knees (name withheld) pulled a gun and shot him in the back of his head. Arthur did not go down there with violence in mind as he did not have a weapon with him.
“If Arthur was up to something, he would have gone down dey armed with his gun and would have pulled first and to do the shooting and Arthur was a little bit drunk too as he was drinking at a bar.
The insider indicated that Braveboy did not even see the shooter and after he fell to the ground the gunman then pointed the gun in the direction of the head of the Carenage man to shoot him but it apparently jammed.
The two of them were then engaged in a tussle for the gun with the individual from the Carenage holding onto the weapon and trying to point it towards the ground when a bullet discharged and struck him in the area of the abdomen.
The injured man who has been identified as 36 year old Joel Dewsbery of the Carenage is presently a patient at the St George’s General Hospital.
Meanwhile, police were called Sunday night to Snug Corner near to Beaulieu in St George North-east following reports of another fatal shooting.
Dead is Shane Joseph who has been described as a person well known to the police for engagement in illegal activities and who was recently released from the Richmond Hill prion.
There are reports that the individual who is from a place known as Gaza in Snug Corner was gunned down by masked assassins in a drive-by shooting.
Four days earlier, Joseph was seen running for his life as one of the figures who operates on 4-Roads chased after him with a cutlass in hand and also pelted several bottles at him in the Grenville Street and St John’s street area in the capital city.
