A worker of the state-owned Grenada Electricity Company (GRENLEC) has lost his both hands following an incident last Thursday when he was electrocuted in the St George North-west constituency.
A company official confirmed to THE NEW TODAY that the incident happened in the vicinity of the Chinese built low-cost housing scheme at Beausejour. “Yes – that’s a fact. I can confirm that both hands were so severely burnt that there were no possibilities of saving them,” he said. The hands were reportedly amputated just under the forearm area.
According to the company official, the employee has been flown to neighbouring Trinidad & Tobago to receive “specialised care”. The employee is attached to the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Department of the utility company.
The senior employee indicated that Grenlec is currently carrying out its own investigation into the matter.“There is a committee right now investigating – gathering all the facts to see what may have gone wrong. I guess it’s a lot we don’t know yet because the real emphasis is seeing how best we can help him. That is a rough one for us,” he said.
“I will treat it now as an accident but it is just unfortunate what these things can do to the team – demoralise the team. It is still emotionally difficult for everybody. It’s sad to think that he could have lost his life,” he added.
The affected Grenlec employee is said to be a young man who is into sports, with a young wife and child.
