Flour prices to increase from Wednesday

Caribbean Agro Industries – the Mt. Gay plant is responsible for most of the flour and poultry products sold on the island

Consumers of products from the island’s sole flour mill will be affected by a price increase from Wednesday.

THE NEW TODAY has received the copy of a letter sent by the Mt Gay-based Caribbean Agro Industries (CAI) to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade & Industry, Jacinta Joseph announcing its new price structure for Baking and Cooking Flour, as well as poultry feed.

According to the letter, the increases will range from as little as 6% to as high as 16% on some products.

CAI attracted national attention in April when the Minister of Health, Nicholas Steele ordered the business to shut down its operations after a small Covid-19 cluster was discovered on the premises.

The letter said that CAI was forced to increase the prices of its products due to higher international prices for wheat, which is one of the main ingredients used in its manufacturing process.
